Women Try Eyelash Growth Serum For A Month
10 Eyelash Growth Serums That Will Give You The Lashes Of Your Dreams
Feel like you suddenly need five or six coats of mascara before it looks like you even have eyelashes?
Yeah, you're not imagining things—hair loss, even in your eyelashes, is really a thing. Changing hormones and vitamin deficiencies as you get older can cause eyelashes to fall out and not grow back, says Dendy Engelman, M.D., New York City-based dermatologist. Womp, womp.
Enter eyelash growth serums, which Engelman says are designed to add back nutrients to sapped eyelash hair, "encouraging and extending its growth."
The big cheese of eyelash growth serums is Latisse, an FDA-approved serum you can only get via prescription. It sells for about 5 per bottle, according to RealSelf.com. Latisse contains an active ingredient called bimatoprost, says Engelman, which targets the growth cycle of your eyelashes to make lashes grow faster, longer, and thicker. Engelman says it's "perfectly safe," although there are some side effects like dryness and itching in the eyes.
If you're not looking for a prescription-level commitment, try an OTC lash serum instead (which strengthens and conditions hair instead of outright affecting its growth cycle, says Engelman). She says these are also safe to use, and recommends looking for the following ingredients for legit results: castor oil (which prevents microbe growth and detoxes skin around the lashes), amino acids (which help nourish and repair damage to hair protein), and rosemary (which stimulates and promotes hair growth at the root).
Just be patient—Engelman says that it’ll take about two to four months to start seeing longer lashes after applying an eyelash serum daily. So if you're in it for the long haul, give one of these eyelash serums a try.
“This product is pure castor oil, which is full of vitamin E and fatty acids to nourish lash hair,” says Engelman.
“I love Blink Brow Bar Lash Oil because it has a host of natural ingredients to promote regrowth, including castor oil to nourish, jojoba oil to strengthen, apricot kernel oil to condition, bamboo to promote shine, and rosemary to stimulate growth,” says Engelman.
Technically, this serum can also be used to prevent wrinkles around the eye area (talk about a two-for-one!). It's packed with ceramides to fortify and condition eyelashes.
GrandeLASH has a solid fan-base on Sephora.com, with 81 percent of users recommending the serum to others. The award-winning serum promises longer, thicker lashes in four to six weeks.
Not only does this vegan pick include castor oil in its ingredients, but it can also be used on your eyelash extensions and eyebrows.
This lash-growth serum is Ecocert-certified (meaning at least 95 percent of its ingredients are organic) and it's vegan, too. The patented herb extract blend delivers nutrients to feed lashes with powerful, natural ingredients for fuller, longer lashes.
This lash serum uses peptides to help make lashes thicker and longer, an ingredient Engelman says has been shown to improve hair growth. “It doesn’t have parabens, sulfates, or phthalates, which will limit the risk of any irritation," she adds.
