1. It reduces your risk of heart disease

Thanks to…stimulating thioredoxin production

The scienceA study published inThe Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistryfound munching on broc florets triggers the body to produce thioredoxin, which protects heart cells from damage. Just make sure you retain the goodness by stir-frying the broccoli or lightly steaming it for about five minutes. “If broccoli is overcooked it loses a lot of its protective effect,” said Professor Dipak Das, who led the research.

2. It fights cancer

Thanks to…I-3-C, sulforaphane

The science“Broccoli is a great source of the anti-cancer compound sulforaphane,” says nutritional therapist and kinesiologistMelanie Flower. “This increases the production of detoxification enzymes, which help the body rid itself of potentially carcinogenic substances.” A recent study published in the journalCancer Prevention Researchfound that the natural compound indole-3-carbinol, present in broccoli, is also a promising cancer-crusher, helping to prevent the cell divisions which lead to the disease developing.

3. It battles high blood pressure

Thanks to…glutamic acid

The scienceThe best vegetable protein for lowering hypertension (high blood pressure) is called glutamic acid and – you’ve guessed it – broccoli is bursting with the stuff. A recent study in theJournal of Human Hypertensionfound that consuming just 5% more glutamic acid can markedly lower blood pressure – so make sure you always take a second helping of the green stuff.
