From Matte Black to Shimmering Berry, the New Smoky Eye is Anything But Basic
After several seasons of a bold lip being de rigueur for an evening out, we’re seeing a rise in smoky eyes. But the latest renditions are far from basic! From the runway to the red carpet, there are plenty of colours, shapes, and textures to get new defined eye inspiration. At Marc Jacobs’ F/W 13 show, François Nars gave models a smudged, imperfect smoky eye, while models at Anna Sui rocked a dense, precise cat eye. Even Michael Kors, known for his sun-kissed, highlighter-ladden models went dark: makeup artist Dick Page applied a jet black, upturned version of the smoky eye. Fast forward to S/S 14 and you’ll finder softer versions at Rochas and Jason Wu. Of course, Hollywood also loves this look. From Olivia Wilde’s sooty shadow to Rooney Mara’s berry pigments, click through to find nine styles to try.

Stewart wore a shimmery, cool-toned smoky cat eye to Chanel’s F/W 13 couture show in Paris. Pick up a palette like Too Faced’s Smokey Eye Shadow Collection (), brush the silver hue into the inner corners of your eyes, then, half way across your lid, blend the black color up and out.
For the Los Angeles premiere ofThor: The Dark World, makeup artist Jeffrey Paul gave Alexander a sultry look inspired by screen sirens of the‘30s. He smudged Votre Vu’s () in Charbon onto the actress’ lashline, then used the brand’s () in Violette: the shade Moiré to set the liner and Raw Silk on the center of her lids.
The trick to pulling off a colorful smoky eye is picking a blush and lip hue in the same color family, like Kendrick did at her London premiere ofDrinking Buddieslast month.

Makeup artist Debra Ferullo gave Barrymore a lighter version in Los Angeles this weekend using the actress’ own line: Flower Beauty. Ferullo used the Shadow Play Eye Shadow Quad () in Smoke and Mirrors, applying a mix of the taupe and brown for definition and the palest shade on the actress’ brow bone and inner corners.
Barrymore wasn’t the only one to rock a smoky eye at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Art + Film Gala this weekend. The soon to be50 Shades of Greystar matched the gold accents on her Gucci dress with a metallic, shimmery shadow under her bottom lashline. Try Bare Minerals Ready Eyeshadow 4.0 () in The Soundtrack.
One of our favorite renditions, Mara wore a shimmery berry eye to a screening ofHerduring the New York Film Festival. To make sure your eyes look rested, not red, line your waterline with a brightening, nude pencil like Tarte’s EmphasEyes Inner Rim Brightener () in Nude. (Visine doesn’t hurt either!)
Never one to shy away from a sultry eye, Wilde rocked a matte dark lid courtesy of makeup artist Melanie Inglessis to a movie premiere in Los Angeles. She used Revlon’s PhotoReady Kajal Intense Eye Liner () under Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Shadow () in Illusoire.
Belle paired her rosy eyes with dark, defined brows and slicked back hair in Los Angeles. Try Sephora’s Retractable Brow Pencil () in Midnight Brown for similarly-defined arches.
