A man with a bald spot on the top of his head, a receding hairline, or hair loss has options other than wearing a hat to cover the problem. No matter what's causing your hair loss — a medical condition or the genes you inherited from your dad, uncle, and grandfather with balding hair — you can find a way to compensate. If you're self-conscious about your hair loss, you can take steps to feel more confident, such as using topical solutions or wearing a hair piece. Your choice depends on your comfort level, the extent of your hair loss, and what will look most natural on you.

Choose the Right Hair Style
Men who aren't ready for a hair piece can work with their hairstylist to cover up areas of hair loss. Even with short hair, some cutting and styling tricks can make thin, balding hair look fuller.
If receding or thinning hair in the front is the problem, ask about a cut that allows for thicker hair farther back on the head to be styled toward the front. Layers in the cut will also give the illusion of volume and density.
"If wearing a shorter cut, layer it and style it forward," says Spalding. "Overextend these areas in the line of recession at the sides of the forehead, and leave those a little longer."
If you use styling aids on your hair, choose a light format, like a mousse or foam. Skip heavy gels, pomades, and hair creams that can clump and bog down hair, exposing any balding areas.
Trim Your Hair
Another option for men is to consider a close cut. A very short or shaved hairstyle works best for men with a smooth, even shape to the head. "It's a more balanced look," says Spalding. You can shave the hair completely down or buzz it really short so that there's still some visible hair — it all depends on your comfort level and style preference.
Consider a Hair Transplant
Men with a significantly receding hairline or a large bald spot may want a permanent solution to replenish hair loss. Hair replacement surgery, such as a hair graft or transplant, can take healthy hair from elsewhere on the head and move it to areas of the scalp experiencing hair loss. This is not something that can be done by your hairstylist, but rather by a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in this cosmetic procedure.
Not all men mind a little thinning hair, but others can be very bothered by it. Hair loss can significantly affect self-confidence. So hang up your hat and talk to your stylist and possibly your doctor about the best way to compensate for your hair loss.
Consider a Hair Piece
7 Things Not to Do for Hair Loss
Many men may opt for a hair piece to cover up a bald spot or thinning hair. Depending on its design, these prosthetics can cover up balding hair patches on the crown or a severely receding hairline. You can wear a hair piece every day or whenever you like. For the best look, invest the time and money to find a high-quality hair piece made from real hair, says Charisse Spalding, a professional hairstylist and owner of Personal Image Hair Salon in Louisville, Ky.
You want the hair piece to look natural and blend in with your own hair. Don't quite know where to start or how to find a good hair piece? Ask your hairstylist for help, suggests Spalding. She often recommends stores and particular hair pieces to her clients and will even help them do research.
