How to choose a radar detector

Most car owners believe that if you buy a radar detector for your car, they will never have to pay any more fines for exceeding the permitted speed limit. It is only necessary to choose in a car dealer a black box with an audible signal and flashing various LEDs, and the problem will be solved. And if you have already violated the rules, then you need to know how to check the traffic police fines.

How to choose a radar detector

First of all, in order to choose a radar detector, it is necessary to determine the concepts of what an anti-radar means and what is a detector. The radar detector is a device that can detect and signal the presence of signals from other radars that measure the speed of the machine. Such devices are on the shelves of shops selling accessories for cars. Antiradar is an adaptation that is designed to suppress radar signals due to the emission of distorting noises and interference.In Russia, as in most countries, this type of device is prohibited for mass sale and exploitation.

Then, to get an answer to the question of how to choose a radar detector (anti-radar), you need to navigate at what frequencies such radars that determine the speed can work. The State Committee on Radio Frequencies (GKR) for the correct operation of radar and speed sensors identified such frequencies as:

  • X-band, 10.525GHz + 25MHz
  • K-band, 24.15 GHz + 100 MHz
  • La-range laser devices

Some radars operating in the X-band, appeared the very first and at the present time are considered somewhat obsolete. And a number of speed meters, which are in service with the staff of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate - traffic police, which use the K-band and operate in a pulsed mode, are still in demand. The current radar detectors can cope with any impulse radar, if they determine the signal coming from the front of the car. In another case, if such a radar will be focused only on your car, then you simply can not have time to react and reduce the speed of movement. A certain difficulty for most radar detectors can be laser radars.They have in stock a very narrow beam, which, when released into the car, determines the speed of the car. A large number of radar detectors are powerless against the current laser radar, such as Amata and LSID2. And only a couple of models of Cobra trade brand detectors, according to statements from their manufacturers, are able to determine the displayed laser signals due to some kind of circular survey. Fortunately, this type of radar can occur, so far, quite rarely among traffic police officers.

When choosing a radar detector, it is also necessary to check that it has a variety of operating modes, such as:

  • Instant-On- determines the short-term activation of radars in the X range, when the speed measurement is made at a discount by "one" shot;
  • Ultra-X, sets pulse signals in the X range;
  • Ultra-K sets the pulse signals in the range K.

After the study of the main characteristics of various radar detectors, the question arises, and whether such detectors will help to avoid getting a penalty for increasing the speed. Almost everyone knows that the radar of the Inspector of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate emits a certain electromagnetic impulse, which is then reflected off the body of the machine and is again received by the detector.If the car is in motion, the frequency of the displayed and received signal may vary. By the difference in frequency between the sent and reflected signal, the radar subsequently calculates the speed of the car.

Which radar detector to choose

In order to determine the degree of reliability of the radar, four different models were taken from different manufacturers: Chinese worth 10,600 rubles, Russian for 890 rubles, and a Korean pair, priced at 7,500 and 3,000 rubles. Imported radar receivers turned out to be very sensitive to random signals, while the Russian device had a direct gain receiver. Extremely sensitive receivers are equipped with a "situ" function, which in English, means the word "city". Activating this feature allows you to reduce the sensitivity of the radar detector in an urban area in order to avoid unfair signals that can come from sliding doors of supermarkets to gas stations, and other objects operating in the same frequency bands as the radar itself.

The next stage of radar testing will be the identification of the quality of work of all four applicants under extreme conditions.The radar for the traffic police will serve as a spark detector, which can operate in the "K" range with very short pulses and can determine the speed in almost three seconds at a distance of up to 500 meters. The Russian radar detected the detector only 500 meters away, which equals the working range of the Iskra. Against it, it is practically useless, like the first Korean radar. Against him, he worked only with a “shot at point-blank”, from 20 meters. Over short impulses, he catches badly enough. And the second “Korean”, which costs almost 7,000 rubles, did not detect any radar at all. Most of the radars of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, the traffic police, work only in the “K” frequency range, with different modulations, that is, the wavelength and the amplitude of vibrations are different. Therefore, some radar detectors and must be specifically optimized for each device traffic police. However, despite the fact that the documentation of the device states that it can work only in the “K” range, this does not mean that it should recognize all radars of traffic police officers.

Returning to the tests of radar detectors, it should be said that the most expensive of the 4 applicants is a Chinese device that can recognize a manual radar a couple of kilometers away.But he can work only if there are a lot of cars on the track. Now it is necessary to check whether the various detectors can detect stationary Chris machines, which, as a rule, are mounted on a tripod or suspended above the track itself. Like a handheld radar, this device can operate in the “K” frequency range, however, in the autonomous mode of operation, that is, in the high-speed mode of vehicles, it can be tracked almost constantly. But the question arises whether the radar will work if it is sent to the back of the driver? In this case, unfortunately, to determine the location of the reverse radar will not work. It turns out that the two Korean and Russian detectors turned out to be practically useless, mainly due to incorrect settings and a weak receiver. The Chinese radar turned out to be the most effective, but on the empty road, even no use from it.

So, after reading the article, you should have received an answer to the question of which radar detector to choose. Each driver can be advised only one thing - to comply with the established speed limit, especially within the city, because no anti-radar can provide you with full protection.
