How to determine the acidity of the soil?

Some gardeners do not attach much importance to the acidity of the soil in their garden, and in vain: knowing these features, you can understand which plants will develop without much hassle, and which ones will have to tinker. In addition, a well-known indicator of acidity helps to find the right tools and methods for processing a suburban area. At the same time, it is not worthwhile to delve too deeply into the topic of soil diversity — there will be enough general concepts for successful gardening.

What is the composition of the soil?

The mechanical structure of the earth is one of the most important indicators, which is very easy to define. According to this indicator, the soils are divided into:

  • heavy - as a rule, these are clayey species;
  • moderate - these include loam;
  • lungs. These varieties include sandy and sandy soil.

Independent species often include gravel or rocky variations, but such types can be found relatively rarely.

To determine the mechanical composition, you need to take a little bit of soil, slightly moisten it and roll it in the form of clay sausage 3-4 mm thick.The resulting product should be scrolled in the form of a ring and evaluate how it was possible:

  • if the soil rolls off without difficulty, it is plastic to the touch, easily retains its shape and coagulates freely - in the area clayey earth;

Soil features and acidification dependence

Soil reaction is an important indicator that can be tested at home.Experts identified several groups of plantations, which depend on the degree of acidification of the soil:

Determination of soil reaction

The simplest method of determining acidity is the delivery of a test material for laboratory analysis. But such methods are not always appropriate and not often everyone can afford it, especially since the methods at hand are no worse:

  1. Using indicator paper, it is quite quick and simple to check the indicator: you need to dig a hole (at least 35 cm in length) and collect soil from its vertical walls, preferably 3-4 times and in different places. The material must be mixed with distilled water and squeezed in a fist with litmus paper. If the earth is acidic, the color of the paper will vary from red to yellow, if it is alkaline, it becomes greenish or blue.
  2. By well-developed plants. If the soil is acidified, mint, violets, plantain, sorrel, etc. will feel great on it. With a weak acidification grows wild rose, chamomile, wheat grass, as well as sow thistles. Alkaline varieties attract poppies and bindweed.

And how to check the level of acidity, if at hand were only folk remedies? There are several ways:

  • On the glass, previously placed on a dark (better black) surface, you need to pour a little material and sprinkle it with table vinegar.If active release of foam has begun - the soil in the garden is alkaline, a moderate reaction occurs in neutral varieties, and foam cannot form in an acidic soil;
