- , a cult-favorite London startup, makes comfortable but sleek slippers you can wear anywhere.
- have merino wool linings, foam-lined insocks and heels, and now come with permanent sneaker soles so you can wear them all day.
- They're not cheap at -0, but they are a superior slipper. If you're looking to buy a pair you love and are willing to spend a bit more for better shoes, I swear by in the winter.
Like many people who spent 0+ heating an apartment that felt like a meat refrigerator, I have the appropriate level of dread for the cold season. Wind tunnels, icy rain, and the sort of shivers that wake you up at the night to groggily wonder "Is it the flu? No, it's just freezing in here," will do that to you.
But I have discovered a few things over the years that make winter actually — dare I say it — enjoyable. The list is short but non-negotiable: Twill and flannel sheets— the cost-effective, nostalgia-ridden solution for Midwestern families everywhere - giant, fluffy hotel-room-grade robes, compact but powerful heaters, , and, last but not least, ridiculously comfortable slippers — preferably the kind that you can safely wear outside and under blankets on the couch without overheating.
For that, you'll want to check out Mahabis. The London startup is best-known for its debut product the , a nubuck leather shoe with 100% wool lining, a detachable rubber sole, and cushion-fold foam heels. The updated version, , is essentially the same but with a permanent sole. It comes in black or beige. The is the same as the Luxe 2, but has a wool upper rather than nubuck leather, and comes with more color options.
If you want a classic slipper design or to save a few bucks, you should get the for . If you want your slippers to look as much like classic outdoor shoes as possible, you'll be happier springing for the nubuck leather of the . The Classic 2 will still look distinctly casual in line at the local Duane Reade, but the Luxe 2 won't draw a second glance.
For me, the do the job. They're ergonomic and compact enough to be worn around my small apartment and under blankets on the couch comfortably, but the relatively sleek design doesn't require me to compromise on warmth. And while some slippers can be overkill with heat, forcing you into a pattern of one leg out of the blanket or one foot out of the shoe, the merino wool typically self-regulates temperature well enough to maintain constant comfort.
I enjoyed the versatility of detachable soles in the , but, since my apartment is shoe-friendly and I'm not wearing these to bed, the permanent sole on the Classic 2 are a welcome update. I know that as the cold sets in and finds its way through the poorly insulated walls in my apartment, that I'll be extremely grateful to have the option of not changing my shoes (and needing to warm up a new pair) to run to the grocery store or a movie with friends.
Another unsung hero of the shoe is the cushion-fold heel, originally designed so the slippers could be worn as a shoe or as a slip-on mule. They contribute to the not-overly-bulky design, and the lightweight, glove-like foam cushions and hugs the heel so you don't slip out without irritation. It's a surprisingly nice touch.
All in all, Mahabis slippers are sleek, comfortable, versatile shoes that will keep you cozy in your home or on the winter errands you don't want to run in the first place. Having said that, they are pretty expensive. You can obviously in the world, and you don't need these if you're happy with saving money or compromising on one or two things the Mahabis are superior at.
For me, I'd rather buy fewer things that do exactly what I want if I'm able, and the Mahabis fit that description nicely. For , they're versatile enough to be worn at home or in public without feeling sloth-like, compact enough to wear without feeling as bulky and desensitized as moon boots, and warm enough to keep my feet snug and happy all day long. If you're looking for something like that — and it's worth to you — then you'll be happy with your Mahabis.
