Psychological protection - the reflex that you need

In life there are different situations, including difficult and unpleasant. And in this case, the reaction of people may also be different. Someone is crying bitterly, trying to arouse sympathy and attract, thus, help from outside, someone on the contrary denies the existence of any problems, continuing to easily overcome life obstacles, while another believes that this does not concern him at all.

But no matter how a person behaves, all his actions, aimed at freeing his consciousness from negative manifestations, are mechanisms of psychological defense. We will talk about them today.

What is it for?

To begin, let's find out what the term “psychological defense” means. This is a human reaction to internal discomfort, hidden threat or external conflict. It is often accompanied by increased anxiety and suspiciousness, and sometimes aggression.

This concept was introduced at the end of the 19th century by Sigmund Freud, who noticed during his practice that people tend to distort reality. Why? In order to maintain the balance of their inner world, minimizing the feeling of anxiety.

Main types

The protective mechanisms of personality exist about 23 species. But we propose to consider the main ones actively studied and applied in psychological practice:

Obvious to others aspects of reality, which cause negative and experiences, are denied and are not recognized by the individual. For example, if a person was informed about the death of a loved one, he will try in every way to refute this information, looking for new evidence for this.

The reason is simple - the internal resource is not enough to relive the situation in a relatively normal way. But subconsciously, a person understands everything, only he is afraid to admit it to himself.

crowding out

This mechanism is also called suppression. It is based on attempts to forget about traumatic feelings, events, thoughts as quickly as possible. To some extent, this method helps to maintain mental balance, because problems can be so influential that their adoption can cause mental disorders.

This is a kind of rollback. In order not to experience the fully emerged feelings and problems, the individual returns to the previous stages of his development. For example, it gets a job that is absolutely not consistent with the level of skills and education. Often manifestations of this protective reaction can be observed in children. When a newborn appears in the family, the older child begins to behave like a small one, thus trying to attract attention.

Attributing positive and negative qualities to others, rejecting them in themselves. Aggressive people are irritated by nervous people, to lazy everything around them seems to be idlers. But it also happens that individuals with low self-esteem elevate and admire others, being sure that they themselves will not be able to achieve this level.

A person who, for various reasons, is not able to speak about his needs, tries to satisfy them in another way. For example, a man to whom the boss reprimanded, not being able to tell him everything that was boiling when he came home, begins to swear with his wife. Then feels a little relief.

But in this way the problem is not solved, and it will be driven even deeper.

One of the most productive methods of psychological protection, which is used in pedagogy. This transfer of destructive energy to achieve positive results. A girl, who is experiencing a rupture of relations, instead of crying for days and nights, begins to write lyric poems.

All these methods help to overcome the feeling of pain and discomfort, but, unfortunately, they do not solve problems.

Is it possible to learn?

In order not to drive your feelings and problems deeper, leaving them unheeded and unsettled, you should train psychological stability. We will give some tips on how to develop it:

  1. Try to realistically assess the emotional color of the event by trying to compare it with the more complex.
  2. From the lexicon should disappear phrases beginning with "bad, that ...", "it's a pity that ...", "unfortunately ...".
  3. If some kind of trouble could not be prevented, it is necessary to concentrate on the method of solving it, and not on the fact that it happened.
  4. Use the switching method. Emotional overstrain can be removed by going to the cinema, to a concert, walking to the forest, to the gym, reading a book.
  5. The method of catharsis. It was used by Sigmund Freud to treat patients with neurosis. For this, the patient had to once again recall and experience the traumatic situation in detail, understand it, disassemble and get rid of the symptoms.
  6. Splashing onto the paper. The easiest option that does not require any additional skills. On paper, you need to describe in detail the situation, read, add, if necessary. After determine the degree of decisiveness and paint a detailed plan for further action.

Psychological protection is needed by all. After all, with its help a person can solve some internal and external conflicts. But if these mechanisms work only to suppress the negative, without leading to a solution, they are destructive. Take care of your psychological health and be attentive to yourself.
