A medical first offers new hope to women who cannot bear children because they have lost their uterus to cancer surgery or were born without one. In September, a woman in Sweden became the first ever to give birth after receiving a womb transplant.

“It gives us scientific evidence that the concept of uterus transplantation can be used to treat uterine factor infertility, which up to now has remained the last untreatable form of female infertility,” says , MD, of the University of Gothenburg, who led the research and delivered the baby.

The 36-year-old mother was born without a uterus, a condition known as Rokitansky syndrome. She is one of nine women who participated in a womb transplantation research project.  Last month, two other participants successfully delivered babies through in vitro fertilization.

While Rokitansky syndrome is rare, uterine or endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer among U.S. women. It usually requires surgical removal of the uterus, known as a hysterectomy, which is the second most frequently performed surgical procedure among reproductive-aged American women after cesarean section.

The first womb-transplant pregnancy was confirmed in the spring, and the baby boy was delivered by cesarean section after the mother developed high blood pressure, or preeclampsia. According to Dr. Brannstrom, “the baby screamed right away and has not required any other care than normal clinical observation at the neonatal unit.”
